Bernice Calhoun

Inglewood, California

Bernice Calhoun was born to the union of Alexander and Nettie Calhoun on November
5, 1944, in Tyler, Alabama. She was the seventeenth child of an amazing family.
After graduating from Tyler Union High School, she relocated to Detroit, Michigan for a
short time. After the news of her dad passing, she moved to Selma to assist in taking care
of her mother. A few years later, she relocated to Detroit and shortly after, she made Los
Angeles, CA her home with her two boys, James LaMar Calhoun Sr., who preceded her
in death and Melvin Calhoun Sr.
She accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age.
January 26, 1977, she relocated to Los Angeles, California and united with Holy Mount
Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, in February 1977, under the leadership of the late
Pastor Ell Dudley. She served faithfully under his leadership. Upon the passing of Pastor
Dudley, she still remained a dutiful and devoted member under the leadership of the pres-
ent Pastor, Dr. Leonard E. White. Bernice wasn't a pew member. Upon becoming a
member of Holy Mount Calvary, she actively supported all activities of the church.
Bernice a.k.a. "The Los Angeles Lakers Number 1 Fan", was a fun natured person whom
we all knew, loved and affectionately adored. Her way to express her love was undoubted through a good joke and a plate of food that would speak to your very soul.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Alexander and Nettie Calhoun; son: James
LaMar Calhoun Sr.; sisters: Etta Mae Quarles, Eliza Brand, Rose Robins, Marie Mc-
Creary, Leola Clay, Nettie Brown and Novella Brown; brothers: Horace Sr., Alex Jr., Will, Frank and George.
Bernice departed this life and entered the presence of the Lord on November 3, 2022 and
will be sorely missed. She leaves to cherish her memories: A loving son, Melvin Calhoun Sr.; four sisters: Lizzie Virgies, Mary Lee Hale, Janie Jones, Essie Quarles; three granddaughters: Brandi
LaSean Calhoun, Melonie Denise Calhoun and Tanae Richards; six grandsons: James
LaMar Calhoun Jr., Melvin Calhoun Jr., Myron Calhoun, Terrell J. Calhoun, Shemar
Marquise Calhoun and Missiah D'Anthony Calhoun; six great-grandchildren; special
friend for many years, Deacon Willie A. Hayden; many nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
